What is a Watershed?

A watershed is an area of land that catches rain and snow and drains into a lake or river. Some are very large while others are just a few acres. Most drain into larger watersheds.
Watersheds provide water for drinking, irrigation, industry, and recreation. Healthy watersheds are important for a healthy environment.
Southwest Ohio includes three large watersheds which drain to the Ohio River: the Great Miami, the Little Miami, and the Mill Creek. These watersheds have many smaller watersheds within their borders.
In Northern Kentucky, 13 watersheds are contained in four basins which drain into the Ohio River. They are Dry Creek, Elijahs Creek, Pleasant Run Creek, Sand Run, Woolper Creek, Licking River, Banklick Creek, Threemile Creek, Gunpowder Creek, Big Bone Creek, Fourmile Creek, Twelvemile Creek, and Taylor Creek.
We all live in a watershed. Our actions affect the soil, water, air, plants, and animals. Working together, we can keep our watersheds healthy.
