The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Soil and Water Resources (DSWR) has the responsibility of implementing Ohio’s Dam Safety program. The DSWR is currently increasing their educational programming and outreach efforts for Public Officials and Dam Owners on Dam Safety related topics. Development of Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for dams is a primary focus of their increased educational efforts. Public officials and Dam owners have critical roles in the successful development and implementation of EAPs for dams.
There are 35 regulated dams in Hamilton County. The class of dams can fluctuate depending on the demographics of the land around the dams. Dan Taphorn, Urban Conservationist at Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District is one of the coordinators of the meetings. Dan says, “these meetings aim to educate regulated landowners, first responders, and public officials about the ODNR Dam Safety Regulations. The focus is to improve communication and be better prepared should an emergency arise. This collaborative effort will help prepare communities and property owners on how to deal with and/or prevent stability issues with their dams.”
