Can you identify trees without leaves? Would you like to?  Identifying trees in winter can be a real challenge.  This is an advanced class for individuals who are familiar with using a dichotomous key.

A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish. Keys consist of a series of choices that lead the user to the correct name of a given item. "Dichotomous" means "divided into two parts". Therefore, dichotomous keys always give two choices in each step. (Oregon State University ‘Common Trees of the Pacific Northwest.’)

This one day workshop is designed to give participants help with careful training and practice to identify trees by bark, twig, branch, pods, and berries.  The class begins indoors with some introductory identification clues and samples. A guide for identifying trees by fruit and twigs will be a class reference source as well as a ‘take-home’ keepsake for your private use. The afternoon portion of the class may be outside, weather and time permitting.

9:30 - Intro to winter tree ID
11:00 - Learning to use a key with practice time on samples
  12:00 - Lunch
    1:00 - Continue practice time
    2:00 - Wrap-up and adjourn

Continuing Education Credits will be offered where appropriate
