Depending on where you live, your storm drains may or may not lead to a treatment plant. Some systems will transport water to a local treatment plant but others empty directly into nearby streams without receiving any treatment. It is critical that nothing other than storm water goes into a storm drain to prevent pollution in our natural environment and damage to our water treatment infrastructure. Keeping our storm sewers clean of debris can also help prevent flooding after large storms. To help keep our roadways safe and water systems clean, prevent buildup of leaves, trash, lawn clippings, and other debris in storm drains.

If you see a storm drain that is clogged beyond what you can safely remove yourself, contact your local Sewer and Water District for assistance. Many Soil & Water Conservation Districts have storm drain labeling programs to increase public awareness and education so contact your local District if you are interested in participating.
